Diffusion refer to the process of absorption/desorption of a solute, e.g. water or oxygen by a polymer material. The diffusion process consist of several steps starting with solution of the solute in the surface of the material. For gases the concentration in the surfaces layer can be predicted by Henrys law.
Diffusion may result in Diffusion Limited Oxidation (DLO) which means that oxidation of a material is limited by the access of oxygen in the bulk of the material, resulting in oxygen concentration profiles. For selected polymers the general Basic Autooxidation Scheme (BAS) desribes the rate of oxidation as function of oxygen concentration which can predict oxidation rate profiles in a material.
