Permeation of gases and liquids through polymer films is a critical property of modern packages used in food industry and constructions. New materials consisting of several barriers have been developed and designed for optimal performance.

  • The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) or water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) of thin films can be monitored by OX-TRAN and Permatran-W which makes use of a carrier gas and a sensitive sesnor to oxygen and water respectively..
  • Water uptake experiments can be used to determine the diffusion coefficient and solubility from which the permeability can be calculated from P=DS
