Barrier properties

Permeation of gases and liquids through polymer films is a critical property of modern packages used in food industry and constructions. New materials consisting of several barriers have been developed and designed for optimal performance.

The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) or water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) of thin films can be monitored by OX-TRAN and Permatran-W which makes use of a carrier gas and a sensitive sesnor to oxygen and water respectively..

Water uptake experiments can be used to determine the diffusion coefficient and solubility from which the permeability can be calculated from P=DS
